Missy Engelhardt Art

Missy Engelhardt's studio practice explores the physical and perceptual qualities of paper through repetition, manipulation, and process. Working primarily with seamless photographic backdrop paper, she transforms a material designed to disappear into a three-dimensional sculptural presence.

Her work moves between drawing, sculpture, and installation, using cutting, scoring, folding, bending, and bleaching as both formal processes and records of time. Influenced by Richard Serra's Verb List, Engelhardt limits the number of actions used within individual works, allowing each gesture to respond to the previous one and generating a cumulative rhythm, texture, and spatial structure.

Through this process, ordinary industrial material becomes unfamiliar. The resulting works retain evidence of their own making, functioning as physical records of movement, repetition, and transformation.
